Heavy Sentence released a fantastic slice of balls-to-the-wall, rocking traditional Metal back in 2021, and it was an album that I couldn’t help but thoroughly enjoy. Its raw purity was an irresistible delight. A few years on and the band have followed it up with a new (Jan ‘24) EP, WARRIORS OF MADNESS. Is this an opportunity for Heavy Sentence to explore beyond their classic influences and expand their sound? Is it balls! It’s an excellent expression of commitment to their righteous, unadulterated sound. A sound that can be found between the years of 79 and 81. And if some Venom-ised NWOBHM is what you’re hungry for, then Heavy Sentence are deliverin’ the goods!

This is a three-track beauty that gets straight to the point, so I’ll do the same. This is Di’anno-era Maiden meets Motorhead meets Thin Lizzy. Each of these influences can be gloriously heard on each of the three tracks, being expressed to different degrees. The title track perhaps leans into the first Iron Maiden a little more than the follow up tracks, and is a barnstormer of an opener. ‘You’ll Never Take Us Alive’ is a full-throttle rocker, where perhaps that Lemmy swagger steps forward. Closer ‘Give Yourself to the Night’ opens with an honest call back to Lynott and co and is a pacey number that provides an almighty adrenaline surge.

While the influences are clear, there’s no denying that Heavy Sentence have a sound that is all their own. And it fucking rocks. If you’ve not checked these guys out yet, this is a great place to start.
